Van Cleef and Arpels Jewelry Exhibit - Set in Style at Cooper Hewitt

There is a certain feeling of timidness whenever I admire a collection created throughout the century. So many brands legends have their vintage museum collections - we heard of hundred year old Louis Vuitton luggage sets or vintage Chanel. Van Cleef and Arpel is one of these brands. Their extensive jewelry collection has been created throughout the twentieth century and is now available for viewing at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
I had a pleasure to preview the Van Cleef and Arpels extensive collection yesterday, it will be available at the museum from today, February 18th until June 5th.

The exhibit preview started with the press breakfast in the gorgeous lounge where we were able to play with the museum’s iPad application. I then participated in a tour explaining different periods and techniques used in creating the Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry.

One of most interesting was the transformation period. The Van Cleef jewelry from that period was worn many ways. The above zipper necklace for example could be worn as two different bracelets.

This brooch with the 95 carat yellow diamond briolette can become a pendant.

This Ballerina brooch was made in 1942 - this type of jewelry - mood lifting was very popular during the war period. Made with platinum, diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
Marc by Marc Jacobs Shoes Fall Winter 2011

If you ever think you work hard, think about Marc Jacobs, creative director at Louis Vuitton, who presented the Marc Jacobs collection yesterday at the Armory. Today, he was already showing completely different looks at Marc by Marc Jacobs ready to wear show. Fall and winter outfits, shoes, handbags, clutches, sunglasses, Jewelry, Marc Jacobs presented the whole gamme.
Shoes ranged from furry wedges to shiny boots and Mary Janes.

Vera Wang Fall 2011
Grace, romance and effortless style were on Vera Wang’s mind when she was creating her Fall 2011 collection. Short leather and suede jackets with fur trims, gorgeous nude dresses toughened up with leather gloves and shoes. The show was full of well chosen contrasts. The set was full of mysteries - starting with the music by Javier Peral to large metal doors where the models were coming out of. It’s as if they were coming out from an ancient jail, or maybe a huge castle. I almost didn’t want to go backstage to preserve the mystery. I wanted to keep my jail/castle image fresh.

Jill Stuart Fall 2011, Fanny Packs on Runways, Runway Jewelry and Accessories

Jill Stuart Fall 2011 collection was very diverse - colorful with bright. Only after the show while looking at the photos did I notice that many outfits had actually hidden stories - animals, sunsets, trees, all this hidden in between the perfect fall hues.

Interesting leather and suede juxtaposition

One of my favorite dresses from the show, I love how perfectly it looks on the model.

I found it hard to believe when I read the article by Rachel Dodes at the www.wsj.com With Fanny Packs on the Runway, Can Mom Jeans Be Far Behind? that we will actually see fanny packs on runways for Fall 2011. And here they were at the Jill Stuart show… Approve, disapprove?

Betsey Johnson Meeting

What a surprise. This morning at the New York Fashion Week Betsey Johnson was hanging out at the Diet Pepsi booth. I got to meet her, briefly chat with her and wish her good luck at her show on Monday.

New York Fashion Week Jewelry

I have been waiting to check out this Tadashi Shoji Kara Ross jewelry collaboration. I’ve been waiting to see if the pieces will be complementing, adding to or overpowering the outfits. Sadly, in my opinion, the collaboration didn’t quite work as a collaboration. It seemed to me that both Tadashi Shoji and Kara Ross created their collections separately and it was as if they met the morning of the show to dress the models together.
The fall 2011 Tadashi Shoji collection was airy, textural but delicate. The Kara Ross jewelry was heavy and metallic. In many cases the texture of the dresses was just too busy to add a necklace. Because of most cuts of the dresses, I had the impression the necklaces were not in harmony with the collection. It’s as if the outfits were "asking for" earrings - gorgeous, delicate, intricate, waterfall like earrings, which would sparkle to the rhythm of the walk of the models.
I loved Tadashi Shoji Fall 2011, I liked the Kara Ross necklaces as well. I just would not pair the two designers together.

This is my favorite dress from the show. I love the romantic color and the randomness of the flowers. Beautiful texture. Thankfully no necklace was added to this dress…

*** Correction: due to the last minute change, the jewelry for the Tadashi Shoji runway show was provided by Dannijo, and not by Kara Ross. I’m sorry for this mistake.
