Jewellery - Eight Reasons Why It’s More Than Just Decoration

I’m always excited when I get submissions for the great blog posts. The sponsored post below was submitted by a designer jewellery supplier with whom I worked before and who wrote a previously published article on The Top Weirdest Kinds of Jewellery in the World.

Jewellery has been in use for many years now. In fact, long before it was even known or recognized as jewellery it was widely used by various groups and communities the world over. Today, jewellery has evolved to mean a variety of things and serve a variety of purposes. Here are eight of the most common uses of jewellery, from the older uses to the most modern.

1. Currency

Starting in the Stone Age, jewellery was used as some form of currency. Due to the need for a standard measure of value, the use of various materials as monetary exchange was adopted. The most common of these were shells and other odd objects. However, when the Stone Agers wore them in transit, they soon took a liking to this retro couture that gave them some Stone Age swagger.

2. Utilities

Still in the ancient times, pieces of various materials were used as fasteners and clasps. Due to the undeveloped nature of the clothing those days, one had to secure the pieces of skin and fur in order to maintain some decency. This is not to say, however, that they did succeed at this!

3. Status Symbol

Moving forward in the time line, jewellery began to achieve some form of aesthetic value. Chiefs and clan elders began to adorn different pieces of jewellery to distinguish their stature in the community. Using items such as feathers from exotic birds and unique animal skins, jewellery became a status symbol.

4. Other Symbolism

With the advent and development of religion and other people groups, jewellery evolved from being a status symbol to membership symbol. Crucifixes and other identification symbols became commemorated in the design of jewellery. Membership of these various groupings usually entailed bearing one of these pieces of jewellery.

5. A Display of Wealth

They say what goes around comes around. Well, as far as the monetary use of jewellery goes, this has certainly come true. Jewellery today, or bling, as it is commonly referred to, has become a sign of wealth and affluence. Starting from the Queen of Bling herself, who happens to have the largest diamond in the world in her crown, down to the celebrities and stars that showcase their success through their jewellery.

6. Wealth Storage

Jewellery has also evolved over time to become a storage medium for wealth. Various persons and organizations today prefer to store their wealth in the form of priceless pieces of exquisite jewellery. It is well known that as it becomes antique jewellery, it gains worth.

7. Charms

Jewellery has been used as a supernatural conduit over the ages. Due to the mystery and allure behind jewellery, as well as sentimental value, this use of jewellery has steadily taken root in society. The rise of the so called good luck charm certainly exemplifies this use of jewellery.

8. Expressionism
